Carol and Gotta Have the Green |
Carol Lindbloom began riding at the age of 5 atop her uncle's plowhorse. Times were tuff and Carol rode around with no saddle as her family could not afford one. But that would all change at the age of 7 when her parents bought Carol her first horse with saddle and bridle for a whopping $75.00. Blossom was and 18 year old stiff-legged 'old' horse that to Carol was beautiful and most importantly, all hers! Soon Carol joined the Pegasus Patrol where Carol and Blossom became Flag Carriers at all the shows, parades, and functions even winning their first blue ribbon at a Pegasus Patrol game show. To this day, Carol still has that first blue ribbon. In 1953, Carol took on a new horse named Ben-Gay or Benny. Expensive for the time, Benny cost $500 and Carol had to earn every penny to purchase the gelding. A former show horse and trick horse for the Ringling Brothers Circus, Benny took Carol to win her first trophy through the Edmonds Game Club on the grass at Edmonds Park during a 4th of July Celebration. Gaming has not been the only competition in Carol's life. With Benny, Carol also has ridden Jumping, Western Equitation, Western Pleasure, and shown Halter. She rode with Washington State Horseman, Evergreen Zone, and Pegasus Patrol until 1963 when Benny died of Colic. At that point Carol decided she was never going to ride again and sold all of her horse equipment. But.... In 1975, 12 years later, Carol purchased a 4 year old filly and the rest they say is history. She started riding again at Quarterhorse Shows, World and National O-Mok-See Game Shows, State Game Shows, and Local Playdays. And her list of achievements through these organizations goes on and on. Carol rode in her first NBHA Barrel Race back in the late 1980's at the Lynden Fairgrounds. In the fall of 2001 she was asked to become the Director of District 1 NBHA. At the time there was a total of 6 members. Carol put on her first NBHA race in 2002 at the Monroe Fairgrounds. 50 riders showed up to compete and several of those riders joined District 1. That same evening, the top 10 riders rode during the Bullrider's Challenge. Carol was one of those riders. That night, fate took Carol in a direction she did not expect. At the end of her run, Carol's horse, Gotts Have the Green, went one way while Carol went the other. She broke her leg and knee. It would take 14 months and 5 surgeries before Carol could walk normal again. In 2006, Carol began to ride again with the help of David Whitman, Debbie Meyers, and Doug Yuckert. Carol rode three game shows but unfortuneatly has not been back since. For now, she truly enjoys putting on NBHA events as it keeps her connected with horses and to the sport she loves. 2009 will mark Carol's 8th year as a District Director and District 1 has grown to over 130 members (and still growing!). Carol has brought District 1 a long way from the start of only 6 members. |
